Introduction to the Book Review of Horticulture in Japan 2026

 This article provides an overview of “Horticulture in Japan 2026”, published as an Extra Issue of The Horticulture Journal. The publication summarizes the current status of horticulture in Japan, major horticultural crops, recent research developments, and emerging technologies. It serves as a valuable reference for understanding both Japanese horticulture and the scientific background of studies published in The Horticulture Journal.
 The planning and editing of “Horticulture in Japan 2026” were initiated under the leadership of the late Dr. Takuya Tetsumura, who recognized the importance of communicating the diversity and achievements of Japanese horticulture and horticultural science to the international community. Following his passing, his vision was inherited by Dr. Akihiko Sato, who, together with many editors and contributors, continued the project and led it to completion.
 As a result of these collective efforts, “Horticulture in Japan 2026” was published in conjunction with the 32nd International Horticultural Congress (IHC2026). This publication reflects Dr. Tetsumura’s foresight and dedication, as well as the commitment of Dr. Sato and all those involved in the editorial process. It also demonstrates the continuing efforts of the Japanese Society for Horticultural Science to promote Japanese horticulture and horticultural science worldwide.
 Furthermore, in the summer of 2026, coinciding with both IHC2026 and the publication of “Horticulture in Japan 2026”, The Horticulture Journal launched the “Hort New Focus” initiative. Through this effort, Japanese horticulture and horticultural science are brought into focus and highlighted for the global horticultural community, providing a timely opportunity to showcase their achievements, diversity, and future potential.
 It is hoped that “Horticulture in Japan 2026” will deepen international understanding of Japanese horticulture, enhance appreciation of research published in The Horticulture Journal, and contribute to further international collaboration and progress in horticultural science.
